Don't leave your dog in a car

Every week we hear about someone leaving a dog in a car parked in a parking lot.
People just are not aware how hot a car can get in 30 minutes. On a 85 degree day the temperature inside your car reaches 120 degrees in 30 minutes. Your dog will become dehydrated and suffer permanent organ damage. Heat exhaustion ( just like in humans) is a horrible way to die.

Just today, I was talking with a friend in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and as she was coming out of her local Kroger, she saw a black lab in a car with a window cracked. The dog was visibly panting, eyes glazed over and he was pawing at the window to try and get out. She was among a group of horrified fellow shoppers that were seeing this. She asked if anyone had called the police and everyone that was standing there said "no". She called the police and as the police arrived the woman who owned the car came out of the Kroger with a full cart of groceries. When asked about leaving the dog, she said "My family needs groceries." My friend gave this woman a hard time about this. She did not press charges, but I think this woman needs to know what she did is considered animal abuse!

I know here in Wilmington, NC where the temperatures have been in the upper 90's that if a dog was left in a car, they would be baked to death. I cannot understand how people that get into their hot cars and crank on the air conditioning can even consider to leave a pet in a car for any amount of time.
If you see a pet in a vehicle, please use your head and your cell phone and call the police. They will come. Believe me, I love animals and if I do see a pet or a child in a car, I will break the window and rescue them.
This is animal abuse and according to a recent inquiry in a case the state trooper responded“There is no law regarding the time a dog can be left in a parked vehicle,” State Patrol trooper Dan McDonald said. “However, if the conditions warrant, the owner can be charged with Animal Cruelty under RCW 16.52.207.”
This poor dog ran out of the back of her SUV and fell to the ground. I would have liked to ask her- Can I let you sit in your car while you shop without any air conditioning? I don't think she would like that too much. I have heat exhaustion and it is awful.

The Animal Care Network has already encountered dozens of dogs and cats suffering from heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Dogs have been collapsing in backyards, on walks and in cars!

TIPS: *Heat stroke can happen in as little as ten minutes *Avoid vigorous exercise and walking *Do not leave your pets in your car *Keep fresh cool water available at all times *Keep your dog in a shaded area *Many dogs like to cool off in a “kiddy” pool
SIGNS: *Increased temperature *Vigorous panting, thick saliva *Dark red gums *Lying down and unwilling or unable to get up *Collapse and/or loss of consciousness *Dizziness or disorientation

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT HEAT STROKE:
*Move your pet out of the heat and away from sun right away *Go to your local veterinarian immediately *Begin cooling your pet down slowing by placing cool washcloth or towel on the body, especially foot pads and around the head *DO NOT use ice or very cool water, only slowly offer cool water, do not force.
If your dog lives outside, please make sure the area is kept clean every day to avoid flies that feed on dogs in the summer, also please make sure your pet is vaccinated! If you see a dog or cat in need of a help, become that dog's advocate. As severe weather continues to hit the US, volunteers and non-profits are doing their best to keep up with the demand, especially when it comes to displaced and injured pets.

As the Mississippi river continues to flood towns in its vicinity (even though some of this flooding is intentional, it doesn't make it any less traumatic for those being affected), shelters are stepping up their game and helping animals that are way outside their jurisdiction.

The Broward County Humane Society based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida is one of those shelters; bundling up pets from a few different Mississippi-based shelters and driving them all the way back to Florida, where they are currently up for adoption. The Washington Animal Rescue League is another organization reaching out to disaster areas, saving pets in both Alabama and Missouri.

With this newest tornado hitting Joplin, Missouri exceptionally hard this past weekend (according to a CNN report it's one of the dealiest tornados in US history) , no doubt extra volunteers and shelters will be needed for both the people who have lost everything and the pets who were either left behind, or are now, sadly, without owners.

Think of Fido as a home-based personal trainer who drags you out for a workout, even in winter, when it's cold, dark and icy.
Dogs help their owners remain physically active year-round, says a new study from the University of Calgary published Wednesday in the journal BMC Public Health.
"It seems really intuitive, but it's never actually been studied," said Prabh Lail, lead author of the study.
Lail, a third-year medical student also working on a master's degree in population and public health at the University of Calgary, announced the results at a news conference Wednesday.
She shared the stage with two mixed-breed, eight-month-old pups, Frank and Inspector Barnaby, both up for adoption at the Calgary Humane Society.
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between dog ownership and physical activity.
Researchers surveyed 428 Calgarians from a random sample, of which 115 owned dogs. Participants completed two surveys, one in winter, another in summer.
"Our winters in Calgary are really harsh and we were interested in seeing how dog ownership impacts physical activity across the seasons," said Lail.
"We wanted to compare dog owners to non-owners. What we found was that dog owners have higher levels of recreational walking across all seasons. They don't seem to have that drop-off in winter as many nonowners do," she said.
The study adds to research that shows when dog owners get out and walk their pets, it motivates others to walk, as well. And that tends to introduce neighbours to one another and make communities safer.
"It's not just a good news story for those with dogs, it's a good news story for community health and well-being," said Melanie Rock, Lail's supervisor and director of the Population Health Intervention Research Centre at the faculty of medicine at the U of C.
"We need to look a lot more carefully and closely at the role of pets in people's lives and in communities."

While previous studies have associated pets with multiple health benefits, the U of C researchers caution that owning a dog is not feasible or affordable for everyone.

Patricia Cameron, executive director of the Calgary Humane Society, recommends Calgarians offer to walk a dog belonging to a friend or neighbour, or join the 857 active volunteers who walk dogs awaiting adoption to benefit from the presence of these animals.

Like most pet parents we love to give our dog the best in high quality dog food. When we started researching the best diet for our Labrador Retriever everything pointed to a raw diet. Since we don't have the time to prepare a balanced and complete raw diet with meats, vegetables and fruits everyday we did our research for a dehydrated raw dog food that contained the highest quality ingredients. Japan's Cat Island survives earthquake but need help

Tashirojima, otherwise known as Japan's "Cat Island" due to its numerous feline inhabitants, is intact after the recent devastating 9-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami, according to Japan earthquake animal rescue support. Hoowever, like so many others devastated by the disaster, both the human and feline residents of the island need help.
The small island in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, is home to at least 100, mostly elderly, people and many more cats, which are valued for their beauty, companionship, and ability to keep the rodent population down in this fishing area. A shrine dedicated to cats exists in the middle of the island -- a favorite of tourists and feline lovers worldwide.

There was concern that the island and its residents did not survive the earthquake, aftershocks, and tsunami, but Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support posted this at Facebook yesterday:
Just to give everyone an update on Tashirojima, the cat island. The people and cats are safe but short of food. A volunteer looked into transporting food by boat, but there is too much debris in the water. A helicopter is the only way. The army will probably get a helicopter ready soon so we are looking into the possibility of asking them to take cat food too.

Teaming up with another organization, Animal Friends Niigata, workers with the Japanese rescue and support team are now in Sendai, near where the earthquake was centered.

Here you can see them preparing for the trip, loading a van with kennels, food, leashes and capturing equipment.
They reported encountering at least one woman, who refused to evacuate because officials would not let her bring her dog, Yosuke, with her. She stayed with Yosuke in her shaking house for three days, but thankfully both are OK. She was very relieved to encounter the rescuers.
I think many of us who love our pets can empathize with such individuals. This latest disaster is a reminder to be prepared for emergencies. S.C. sheriff looks into dog deaths at CHESTERFIELD, S.C. animal shelter
The Chesterfield County sheriff has launched an investigation into allegations that county employees shot and killed as many as 22 dogs at the county's animal shelter.
Deborah Farhi, a volunteer at the shelter, brought the allegations to light on Friday after visiting the animal control facility.
She told WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner, she became concerned when she noticed that several of the dog crates were empty.
She asked an inmate who works at the shelter why the dogs were missing and, according to Farhi, the inmate told her that the dogs had been shot and killed at a landfill across the street from the shelter.
"I can't believe that they would do that," Farhi said. "I can't believe it. We can't let this happen anymore. This has to stop today."
According to Farhi, she and two other members of the Paws & Claws Animal Rescue Group went to the landfill and dug up the remains of two dogs.
She took pictures of the landfill site, including one that shows what appears to be blood around a dog's ear, as well as another picture that shows one bullet on the ground.
They dug up the remains of two dogs, but Farhi believes more were shot. She told WCNC that an inmate working at the shelter told her 22 dogs were killed.
"I went from crying uncontrollably to shaking in anger. I was so upset, I thought my head was going to explode," Farhi said.
Farhi's pictures of the dead dogs were sent to other pet lovers and other rescue groups. The pictures were also posted on Facebook, quickly an backlash.
Officials at the animal control shelter told WCNC their employees have done nothing wrong.

But many of them do display intelligence and a desire to learn, as well as an ability to apply past experiences to present moments and future expectations. The gap between human intelligence and that of animals might be so wide as to be insurmountable, but it's not quite as big as we used to think it was. As anyone who's ever had a pet can tell you, animals are a lot sharper than you might want to believe. In fact, they're a whole lot like us.
Pigs are often as smart as dogs: To a degree, that's a little misleading: animal intelligence is extremely difficult to compare across species, and a large part of what we perceive in dogs and pigs as intellect is really a combination of instinctual behaviors and an ability to be trained and domesticated. Still, there are some broad similarities between the animals, including an ability to reason with simple puzzles or escape from closed areas. Pigs have been known to figure out how to open their pen gates and then stage a prison break for the rest of the animals. Pigs can also understand and use mirrors, something that's beyond many animals.
Elephants mourn the deaths of their own: Elephants are the only animals who have been observed to have legitimate death rituals. They don't just take note of other dead elephants; they actively mourn them and often cover their bodies with branches and leaves. Elephants will often hold vigils for days over the bodies of their fallen relatives, leaving only to get food or water and then coming right back to stand guard over the body. This isn't just a reflex or a search for some pleasurable condition; this is evidence of something larger and potentially much more complicated at work. Elephants act almost like families.
Dogs get jealous: Dog owners have long noticed and joked about canine behavior that looks a little like jealousy, e.g., the way a dog will bark when its owners embrace each other and seem to ignore the dog. But a 2008 study by Austrian scientists showed that dogs really do feel a primitive form of jealousy. After giving a pair of dogs treats when they performed handshakes, scientists stopped giving one of the dogs the treats, and that dog quickly stopped playing along and even expresses stress and physical annoyance when the other animal kept getting fed. We've always projected emotions onto our pets, but the truth is that they've got their own emotions to express.
Dolphins use culture for learning just like we do: Dolphins have long been regarded as some of the smartest, friendliest animals on the planet. They've also been observed acting altruistically, helping human swimmers ward off shark attacks. But a few years ago, researchers discovered that dolphins are remarkably adept at using tools, and moreover, that dolphins actually pass their knowledge through a training process. That's a huge thing to learn, and the first time any evidence of what's called "cultural transmission" was discovered in an ocean-dwelling mammal. Dolphins in Australia would break pieces of sponge from the seabed and use them on their noses as tools in the foraging process. Scientists learned that those dolphins using the sponges were maternally related, meaning they had passed the knowledge through a family line.
Crows remember faces: Studies conducted recently at the University of Washington revealed that crows have better memory and flock-wide communication skills than people originally suspected. Scientists donned special masks (modeled after cavemen) and then caught and released several birds, after which they would wear the masks while strolling through campus on a route past the locations where the birds had been caught. Crows would call out and squawk at them, and over time, more and more of them would swoop down to scold them or sound an alarm for others. In other words, the crows remembered the face of the man who had put them in danger and shouted out a warning for other crows whenever they saw him reappear, and they did this repeatedly over at least two years.
Rats have dreams (if not aspirations): In 2001, researchers at MIT implanted electrodes into the hippocampi of several rats and monitored their neuron activity as they ran mazes and ate treats. They then monitored the rats' brains while the animals slept and discovered that similar areas fired up when the rats hit REM sleep. Comparing the info showed that the rats' brains were essentially replaying the events of their day, and in some instances, scientists were able to say what specific part of each maze the rats were dreaming about at a given moment based on their brain activity. Researchers later found that rats also dream about their daily activities during slow-wave sleep, the later stages of REM sleep. Granted, they don't have much of an exciting day to dream about, but it's shocking to realize that their brains, like ours, often just regurgitate the day's events when asleep.
Parrots are about as smart as young children: After gathering information for decades, scientists came to the conclusion in 2006 that parrots are generally on par with 5-year-old humans when it comes to basic intelligence, though their language skills only really compete with 2-year-olds. In other words, they can identify hundreds of objects from their daily lives and respond to simple questions, though the ability to form complex sentences is beyond them. Alex, an African gray parrot in the study, was able to do basic math, identify colors, and tell researchers what he wanted to do with his day.
Apes use tools and share that knowledge with each other: As chronicled in the documentary Ape Genius, apes are so much smarter than we often give them credit for being. They aren't just our closest living relative; they're actually known to use tools for living and fashion spears for hunting, just like our primitive ancestors. There are still, obviously, major things that separate us from apes, including the ability to regulate our emotions and form advanced cultures based on common emotional ideals. But apes mirror humans in their willingness to cooperate on major projects like seeking food and making shelter, which puts them closer to us, even if permanently removed.
Cats make memories for life: Just about every memory a cat makes is one it makes for life. This means that its experiences as a kitten will play a pivotal role in shaping what kind of personality it develops later on. Positive encounters with people and other animals (like dogs) will generally make for a friendlier cat, while abuse and other negative experiences will make the animal more skittish. Cats are already prone to flight, so an early encounter with a mean dog or horrid owner will only heighten those responses and make the cat believe that all dogs or people are dangers. It's up to owners to be responsible and demonstrate loving care for the cat from birth.

This is a great story. Two animal loving celebrities joined forces to help rescue these 25 abused circus lions from Bolivia. Bob Barker and Jorja Fox arranged to help move these lions from a hellish condition. Bolivia has now passed legislation against keeping animals in containment in such conditions as this. The United States needs to pass legislation such as this. A good example of this is Billy the elephant in the LA zoo. He is all alone in concrete confine. This is true testament to what we can do to help animals in horrific situations. Kudos to Bob Barker and Jorja Fox!

DENVER (AP) - Twenty-five lions, most of them rescued from Bolivian circuses, began their new lives at a Colorado wildlife sanctuary on Thursday, pouncing in large, fenced areas and enjoying the feel of grass on their backs.
The 14 males and 11 females were flown into Denver International Airport on Wednesday afternoon and trucked to the Wildlife Sanctuary in Keenesburg, about 35 miles northeast of Denver.
On Thursday, Denver's KUSA-TV showed lion cubs roughhousing in the background as their mother looked toward the camera, relaxing behind the fence. Other lions, accustomed to being confined to small cages, sprawled on their backs, with their arms and legs in the air like the family dog.
The animals were rescued from deplorable conditions after a law was passed last year in Bolivia prohibiting all performances involving animals, Animal Defenders International said. Most of the lions were dehydrated and suffered from eye and foot infections when rescued, the group has said. David Kopp, chief of wildlife in protected areas in Bolivia's environment ministry, said 24 lions were rescued from circuses, while another former circus lion was saved from a zoo that was being closed down.
The rescue leaves Bolivia with three lions, which are in accredited zoos, he said.
When the lions landed at Denver's airport, the jetliner pulled into a maintenance hangar and police officers armed with assault rifles stood by as a precaution.
Former game show host Bob Barker and actress Jorja Fox of CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," the group's ambassador, were on hand to welcome the airlift, dubbed Operation Lion Ark. Barker, who helped finance the $200,000 effort, said he was excited to see the animals headed to a sanctuary where they will have room to roam.
"They will be the happiest little babies you ever met," he told reporters.
Barker said he hopes someday no circuses will have animal acts.
As the first caged animal was moved off the plane, Barker yelled, "Lion No. 1, come on down," mimicking the way contestants were introduced on "The Price is Right."
While three cubs were in one cage with their mother, the rest traveled in their own cages, accompanied by a veterinarian. Before leaving Santa Cruz, Bolivia, they were given sleep medication.
A 15,000-square-foot biosphere has been built at the sanctuary to help them adjust to Colorado's chillier climate. Once they do, the big cats will be able to roam around 80 acres at the sanctuary, home to about 270 wild animals, including other lions, tigers, bears and wolves.

Larry the cat has been brought in to the Prime Minister's official residence to clean up a gang of rats who have been openly parading in front of the TV cameras.
He had lately been living at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home after having been taken in as a stray.
He was recruited on Tuesday specifically for catching rats, but Prime Minister David Cameron's young children are believed to have been in favor of seeing him move in.
Larry will be looked after by Downing Street staff, who helped choose him, and will have the run of most of the offices and official rooms as well as the garden.
Battersea said Larry showed all the signs of the hunter instinct needed for seeing off rats as well as the right qualities in coping with the demands of daily life at Number 10.
"He's quite independent and has bags of character," it said in a statement. "I can definitely see Larry holding his own at Downing Street."
The BBC has shown footage of rats scuttling down the London street as correspondents reported live on camera.
Downing Street had asked for a cat that was happy meeting new people, but had few other requirements, the shelter said.

Diseases of the pancreas and liver, especially may cause impaired fat absorption resulting in impaired bodily utilization of these acids. Sources for omega 3 fatty acids are from plants and cold water fish.
The plant sources contain the ALA fatty acids, but flax seed oil is not assimilated or digested well in our pets, since the ALA must be converted to DHA and EPA to be of benefit. The best sources for omega 3 fatty acids is from cold water fish oils such as salmon, halibut, herring, cod and sardine. These contain DHA and EPA. DHA and EPA are the precursors to eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are formed by body tissues during self-healing responses to stimuli. These hormone- like substances act as natural anti-inflammatory agents.
Why are omega 3 fatty acids important as a nutritional supplement for dogs?
Originally the omega 3 fatty acids were known to help with a more lustrous, shiny coat for your pet. Cats vs. counters
On Friday I wrote about how to keep cats off the kitchen counters. Today, some of you have responded with your own ideas:
I resolved that problem by leaving strips, piles and balls of crinkly-sounding aluminum foil in all the spots where the cats would land when they jumped up on the counter. Cats, at least MY cats, hate crinkly-sounding aluminum foil.
Only had to leave the foil lying around for a couple of days and they stopped jumping on the counters. I keep it stashed in the hall closet, in case one of them starts feeling adventurous.

Here is a trick to make cats think twice about jumping on counter tops or furniture. Carefully set mousetraps upside-down on the forbidden surface. When the cat jumps up, the trap is harmlessly sprung. It leaves an impression on the flustered feline. (Zac in Alameda) (Once you set the upside-down traps on top of the counter, lay sheets of paper over the tops of the traps. It makes a lot more noise and also makes sure nobody's toes get caught in the bouncing traps. /Gary)
I kept a spray bottle full of water handy and spritzed our kitten with it whenever he got up on the counters. He had gotten to the point where he'd jump off as soon as he saw the bottle, and eventually gave up (at least when I was home), but now he is returning to his old ways, so the bottle is out again. My method to stop my precious Siamese from jumping on my counter, newly refinished ebony piano and suede chair, and scratching on my office chair was to cover the surface with plastic bags. I put a plastic bag over the back of the office chair and used plastic wrap to cover the area on the piano and counter where she jumped up and
on the back of the suede chair where she scratched. She tried the area out once and never tried again. I don't know why it worked and I don't know where I got the idea but it worked for me. It looks pretty stupid but I only had to keep the plastic up for a short time. Worth a try. Good luck. (Paula L., cyberspace)

Dangers of antifreeze for pets

With winter in full force we thought we would talk about poisining by antifreeze.
Antifreeze is a common freeze preventative used in car engines. Its sweet scent and taste is appetizing to dogs and cats, who will drink the liquid if left unattended. Antifreeze is extremely toxic and causes kidney failure; even a small amount can be fatal to a pet in just a few days.
As little as two ounces of conventional antifreeze can kill a dog and only one teaspoon is enough to poison a cat. Toxicologists report that EG antifreeze, once inside the body, is changed into a crystalline acid which attacks the kidneys.
Treatment for this condition is dependent on how early the pet is seen after ingestion, but may include inducing vomiting, inserting charcoal in the stomach to bind antifreeze in the intestine, kidney dialysis, and even kidney transplantation.
Unfortunately, the kidney damage caused by anti-freeze is severe and permanent.
So, keep both new and used antifreeze in sealed containers, out of reach of pets. Clean up any spills of antifreeze on driveways and other surfaces. Keep pets confined when changing or working with antifreeze. Consider the use of alternative antifreeze products that are less toxic to pets. One company that we found is called Sierra Antifreeze. It is propylene glycol based and can be used for most winterizing needs. It is certainly less toxic than traditional antifreeze. But, the ASPCA says that any antifreeze is not truly non-toxic. Both propylene glycol and methyl alcohol have the potential to cause gastrointestinal irritation, central nervous system depression, and even death from respiratory failure in severe cases. No matter what the type of antifreeze you use, remember to keep your unused product away from pets.

If you suspect that your pet has drank anti-freeze, please rush them to the veterinary clinic immediately for treatment.

Signs of ingestion are:

Vomiting·
Seizures·
Extreme Thirst·
Abdominal Sensitivity

Treatment for antifreeze poisoning needs to begin as soon after ingestion as possible to be effective.

Since the company moved from Brazil to Argentina January 2010, they have not been able to get us certain products.

Fairfax County school officials and the family of an epileptic 12-year-old boy have worked out an agreement that will allow him to attend school with his specially trained service dog on a two-week trial basis.
Beginning Tuesday at Fort Belvoir Elementary School, Andrew Stevens will have Alaya, a 5-year-old German shepherd who Andrew's parents say is trained to detect and respond to seizures that their son experiences as a symptom of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy.
The dog carries a magnet in her collar that she can swipe over a surgically implanted vagal nerve stimulator in Andrew's chest. The device sends electric signals to the brain that can ease or stop the seizures.
The school system agreed to allow the dog in school on the condition that Andrew's father, Army Sgt. Angelo Stevens, accompany the boy and the Alaya.
"The father will come to the school and will be the dog's handler for two weeks," said Fairfax schools spokesman Paul Regnier. "We'll have a meeting after the first week to evaluate."
School officials said last week that teachers and aides in Andrew's special-education classroom can respond to emergencies at least as well as the dog. They also said that the animal needs a handler certified under state guidelines and that Andrew, who functions on a kindergarten level academically, has not been certified.
Stevens said he has taken two weeks' leave from his Army intelligence job at Belvoir to ride the school bus and attend class with his son and the dog. He said he will use the time to show school staff and students that Andrew can safely handle the dog - a chief concern of the county.

"We'll start to integrate the dog into the school next Tuesday," Stevens said. "The main process here is to show that Andrew can handle the dog. Andrew will pass with flying colors."
The family's predicament has drawn intense publicity, including an appearance on "Today" on Tuesday morning by Andrew, his mother, Nancy, and Alaya.

Holly, mistletoe, poinsettias are all popular plants to have in the home at Christmas, especially in the northern hemisphere. These plants are toxic to cats so should be placed where your cat can't get to them. Please see our page on common household toxins for an extensive list on toxic & non toxic plants.
Visitors
Some cats love the attention of visitors, others find strangers in their house stressful. Christmas is often a busy time with visitors coming & going. Be mindful of your cat's feelings & give the cat the option of somewhere quiet to escape to should the need arise, this is particularly important if your friends & relatives have young children.
Xmas ribbons/wrap
Rbbons etc., pose the same problem as tinsel, if eaten, it may lead to intestinal blockages. It's important to ensure all ribbons/wrap etc., are safely disposed of.
Food/Sweets/Chocolate
Many cat owners enjoy giving their cat the occasional treat of "human" food & generally this doesn't harm the cat. However, it is important to remember that some foods which are fine for humans to eat can be toxic to cats. The odd sliver of chicken or turkey (off the bone) is fine, however it really isn't a good idea to give them large quantities of such food as this can lead to gastrointestinal problems. Never give your cat cooked chicken or turkey bones, these bones can splinter & can become lodged in your cat's throat or puncture the intestines & stomach. Chocolate is toxic to cats, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic. Chocolate contains both caffeine & theobromine, which are both toxic. If you suspect your cat has eaten chocolate watch for signs of restlessness & vomiting, if in doubt, see your vet.
Cats will often scavenge for food in the garbage so be aware that if you've covered your turkey with foil & thrown it in the bin, your cat may drag it out & chew on it which could make the cat sick. Cooked turkey bones will also attract your cat. Be aware of this & if possible, take your food scraps etc., to your outside bin.
Christmas Tree/Decorations
The only fool proof way to keep your cat away from your Christmas tree is to put the tree in a room the cat can't access. Unfortunately, this is often not practical. So the next best solution is to make the tree as safe as possible. Real Christmas trees are more dangerous to cats than fake plastic ones. Pine needles can puncture internal organs if eaten, they are also toxic to cats. If you do have a real tree, make sure the drink stand has plenty of water to prevent the tree drying out & losing needles. It is important that your cat isn't able to get to this water & drink it as it could result in poisoning. Ensure the tree has a good solid base so it won't easily be knocked over by your cat. Try not to have the tree near furniture & or shelves which the cats could use to jump onto the tree. Be careful with tinsel, if you must have it on your tree, place it at the top of the tree where the cat is less likely to be able to get at it. Tinsel can be caught around the base or move down to the intestines & stomach & cause a blockage, which will result in emergency (and costly) surgery to remove it. A safer alternative are the strands of beads. Ornaments should be securely attached to the tree to prevent them being knocked off. Also place delicate ornaments up high where they're less likely to be knocked off & broken. When there is nobody around, unplug Christmas lights, you may want to try applying a cat repellent such as bitter apple to the lights to deter your cat from chewing the wires, obviously if this was to happen it could cause a fatal electric shock. Artificial snow is toxic to cats, so is best avoided. Candles are especially popular over the Christmas holiday period, be careful to make sure your cat can't get close to lit candles. Please note, your cat isn't a novelty item & it's dangerous to try & decorate your cat with ribbons etc.

With cold weather upon us, animal control officers urge pet owners to take the proper precautions to safely care for their pets. “A general rule of thumb — if it’s too cold for you, most likely it is too cold for your pet,” said Pell City animal control officer Rose Ogden. Ogden said she has received several calls from individuals concerned about dogs on chains in yards. “Even if the dog has a doghouse, some days it is still too cold for the dogs to be outside,” she said. Ogden said some breeds of dogs are better protected from the cold than other breeds.“Short-haired breeds of dogs, and also puppies and older dogs won’t be able to handle the cold as well as long-haired healthy adult dogs,” she said. Ogden said short-haired dogs, puppies and older dogs should be brought inside when the temperature is below freezing.“Dogs do need exercise, but consider the dog’s age and length of coat when you let it out for exercise,” she said. “You can let it out for short periods of time.”Ogden said outside dogs should have a well-insulated doghouse. “There should be adequate room in the doghouse for the dog to turn around and lie down comfortably, but not so big that the dog’s body heat can’t keep the inside of the doghouse warm,” she said. “A large structure such as a shed is not adequate shelter, because the dog won’t be able to use its body heat to keep warm.” Ogden said dogs should have dry bedding at all times, especially if the weather is wet. “Blankets can be warm, but if the blanket gets wet it can cause more harm than good,” she said. Ogden said using a wooden pallet to raise the doghouse off the ground can help keep the doghouse drier. “Check your dog’s bedding regularly,” she said. Ogden said straw bedding can also be used, but owners should make sure to change the bedding if it gets wet or soiled.“Pet owners should also check their dog’s water bowls frequently, and remove any accumulation of ice,” she said. Ogden said a quick and inexpensive way to insulate a dog’s water bowl is to take a tire and place a bucket of water inside the tire. Then place small rocks around the bucket inside the tire.“The sun will heat the rocks and help keep the water from freezing,” she said. “But you should still check the water every time you check on your dog, especially in the mornings.”Ogden said this year she is focusing on educating the public and helping animals in need while their owners are gone for the day.“So far, everyone I have spoken with has been very cooperative,” she said. “If the animal is in immediate danger and I can’t locate the owner or provide for the animal until the owner is located, then the animal is taken to the Pell City Animal Shelter for temporary care until the owner is located."

Forget the mall — the popular place to be this weekend is the 10th annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Long Beach, Calif. Some 2,500 of the world’s top show dogs will converge on the city to compete for more than $225,000 in prize money — and major bragging rights.
Event chairman Ron Menaker expects this year’s show to produce striking matchups. “The top dogs from across the country have entered, including our new AKC Grand Champions, so we expect this event to be one of most hotly contested championships yet,” he says.
The two-day show is held in conjunction with the AKC Agility Invitational and the AKC Obedience Invitational, the Junior Showmanship competition and the Eukanuba World Challenge, making for a major, Olympic-style multidisciplinary event.
